Why Is My Vinyl Record Skipping? Causes and Fixes
Share
You've put on a favourite album, settled in to listen, and suddenly the needle jumps or repeats the same section. A skipping record is frustrating, but it doesn't always mean the vinyl is damaged.
At Harbourside Records, we get questions about skipping records from both new collectors and people who've been playing vinyl for years. Here's what to check before blaming the record.
1. Dust, dirt or debris in the grooves
Dust and debris can interfere with tracking. Use a proper record-cleaning brush or suitable vinyl-cleaning system, following its instructions. Brush gently in the direction of the grooves. Avoid household cleaners, paper towels and rough cloths.
Also inspect the stylus. A dirty stylus can struggle to follow the groove. Only clean it using a method approved by your cartridge or stylus manufacturer, and never apply sideways pressure.
2. Your turntable isn't level
Place the turntable on a firm, stable surface and check that the platter is level. A wobbly shelf, uneven furniture or speakers vibrating the same surface can contribute to skipping. Move speakers away from the turntable and keep the setup clear of foot traffic where possible.
3. Tracking force is incorrect
On turntables with an adjustable tonearm, tracking force must match the cartridge manufacturer's specified range. Too little force can make the stylus jump; excessive force can cause unnecessary wear. Use the manufacturer's instructions and, if needed, a stylus force gauge.
Don't put coins or other weights on the tonearm to stop skipping. That can damage both the record and stylus.
4. Anti-skate needs checking
If your turntable has adjustable anti-skate, set it according to the manufacturer's guidance. Incorrect adjustment can contribute to tracking problems. Not all turntables have this control, so don't worry if yours doesn't.
5. The stylus is worn or damaged
A worn, bent or damaged stylus can cause skipping, distortion and record wear. If you suspect damage, stop playing records until the stylus is checked or replaced with a compatible model. Don't touch the delicate tip with your fingers.
6. The record is warped, scratched or poorly pressed
Deep scratches, warps and some manufacturing defects can cause a skip at the same point each time. Look at the disc under good light. If a new record skips at exactly the same spot on a correctly set-up turntable, contact the retailer rather than repeatedly forcing playback.
7. Some entry-level turntables have limitations
Not every turntable offers adjustable tracking force, anti-skate or a replaceable cartridge. If multiple clean records skip on the same player, particularly during loud or bass-heavy passages, the player itself may be the issue. Don't assume every record is faulty.
How to troubleshoot a skipping vinyl record
- Stop playback and inspect the record and stylus.
- Clean the record safely and check for visible damage.
- Make sure the turntable is level and isolated from vibrations.
- Check tracking force and anti-skate if your model allows adjustment.
- Try another clean record and note whether the skip occurs at the same place.
- If the problem continues, consult the turntable manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a brand-new record skip?
A new record can have a pressing defect, but dust, setup and stylus problems are also possible. Test your setup before assuming the record is defective.
Can a scratched record be repaired?
Cleaning may remove debris that causes playback problems, but it cannot reverse a deep scratch in the vinyl.
Why does my record skip when I walk past?
Footfall vibrations may be reaching the turntable through the floor or furniture. A more stable location or appropriate isolation can help.
