Where to Buy Vinyl Records Online in Australia – A Record Store Owner's Guide

Buying Vinyl Records Online in Australia

If you're looking to buy vinyl records online in Australia, there's certainly no shortage of places to shop. But finding a record store with a great selection, reasonable prices and run by people who genuinely know their music can make all the difference.

I'm the owner of Harbourside Records, an independent record store based in Warilla on the NSW South Coast.

We stock thousands of new and pre-owned vinyl records, covering everything from classic rock and pop through to metal, hip-hop, obscure soundtracks and plenty more.

Whether you're looking for a particular album or just browsing to see what catches your eye, here are a few things worth considering when buying records online.

Buying New Vinyl Records Online

There's something pretty satisfying about opening a brand-new record.

Whether it's a new release from your favourite artist, a classic album being reissued or something you've been chasing for years, buying new vinyl is a great way to build your collection.

One thing I'd recommend is checking which pressing you're buying.

Some albums have multiple versions available, including coloured vinyl, anniversary editions, remasters and standard black vinyl.

Prices can vary quite a bit between editions, so it's worth checking the details before purchasing.

At Harbourside Records, we stock a large range of new and sealed records across plenty of different genres.

Don't Overlook Pre-Owned Vinyl

If you're building a record collection, pre-owned vinyl is definitely worth a look.

Some of the best records you'll find are older pressings, albums that aren't currently available new, or releases that have become harder to track down.

Buying pre-owned can also be a good way to discover music you might not have otherwise considered.

Of course, condition matters.

When shopping online, it's important to understand how a record has been graded and whether the condition matches what you're expecting. All of our pre owned Records are cleaned resleeved and accurately graded on the product page.

We regularly stock pre-owned records at Harbourside Records, and the selection changes as different titles become available.

Why Buy From an Independent Australian Record Store?

There are plenty of large retailers selling vinyl these days, but independent record stores offer something a little different.

For starters, you're dealing with people who spend their days ( and nights ) surrounded by records.

Independent stores often carry a mixture of popular releases, older titles, harder-to-find albums and records you might not come across at a larger retailer.

Shopping with an Australian business also means you're supporting a local store and the people behind it. Every order is hand packed and shipped by the owner of the store personally.

At Harbourside Records, we're based upstairs at 4/4 George Street in Warilla, NSW.

If you're in the Illawarra or South Coast area, you're welcome to visit us in person. Otherwise, you can browse our online store from anywhere in Australia.

What Should You Look for When Buying Vinyl Online?

1. Make Sure You're Buying the Correct Edition

Albums can have multiple pressings, different track listings and special editions. Double-check the details, particularly if you're buying something specific. We have discogs links attached to most of our records so you can easily check the exact pressing details.

2. Check the Condition of Pre-Owned Records

Not all second-hand records are in the same condition. Look for clear grading information before purchasing.

3. Compare Prices

Vinyl prices can vary between retailers. It's always worth comparing the same edition rather than assuming every pressing is identical.

4. Check Availability

Some online stores list records that need to be ordered from suppliers. If you're looking for something quickly, check whether the record is actually in stock.

5. Consider Packaging and Delivery

Records need to be packed properly to reduce the risk of damage during shipping.

At Harbourside Records, we use quality LP mailers to help protect records during delivery. Local customers can also take advantage of our collection option.

Building Your Vinyl Collection

One of the best things about collecting vinyl is that there's no right or wrong way to do it.

Some people collect every release from their favourite artists. Others enjoy finding original pressings, coloured vinyl or albums they've loved for years.

And some people simply enjoy browsing through records and discovering something new.

Whatever your approach, I'd always recommend buying music you actually enjoy listening to rather than worrying too much about what everyone else is collecting.

A good record collection should reflect your own taste.
