Keep your records upright
Store LPs vertically like books, with enough support to stop them leaning. Avoid heavy horizontal stacks and overcrowded shelves. Leave enough room to remove an album without bending the jacket.
Avoid heat and direct sunlight
Keep records away from windows, heaters, hot garages and parked cars. Excessive heat can warp discs and fade sleeves. A stable indoor environment is preferable to one with large temperature swings.
Protect against moisture
Choose a dry, ventilated room. Damp storage can damage paper jackets, cause musty odours and encourage mould. Keep collections off floors where spills or flooding could occur.
Use the right inner sleeves
Clean, suitable anti-static or polyethylene-lined inner sleeves can reduce dust and scuffs. Keep original printed inners for collectability, even if you store the disc in a separate protective sleeve.
Protect album artwork
Outer sleeves reduce shelf wear, fingerprints and rubbing between jackets. Choose sleeves that fit without forcing the record or damaging the corners.
Handle records carefully
Touch the edge and labelled centre rather than the grooves. Return LPs to their sleeves after playing, and avoid placing bare discs on furniture or other records.
Can a warped LP be repaired?
Specialist flattening services may improve some warps, but results vary and damage is possible. Avoid ovens, irons, direct sunlight or improvised weights. Prevention is safer.
Frequently asked questions
Should vinyl be stored flat?
Upright with proper support is the recommended approach for most collections.
Can records warp in a hot car?
Yes. Temperatures in parked cars can rise enough to damage vinyl and sleeves.
